April 9 – both a day of remembrance and unity
April 9 is commemorated with great respect in Georgia. This day is known in the history of Georgia as the Day of National Unity and is dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives in the country's struggle for independence. In this regard, as every year, commemorative events were held in Batumi. With the participation of the Consul General of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Batumi Fuad Azizov and employees of the Consulate General, a wreath was laid at the monument to the victims of April 9 in front of the building of the House of Justice in Batumi, and the memory of the victims of the tragedy was commemorated with respect.
It should be noted that the event that underlies this day is the tragedy that occurred in Tbilisi on 9 April 1989. During the events of 9 April 1989, as a result of the intervention of Soviet troops on peaceful demonstrators, 21 people died and more than 100 were injured. Although the protests initially began amid political tensions over Abkhazia, they later developed into a nationwide movement for Georgian independence.
This tragedy marked a turning point in Georgia's history and played a significant role in the country's path to independence.
